Selena Gomez posted an incredibly cringe video crying online about illegal immigrants being deported.
To be fair, it’s normal to be upset at ICE raiding literal elementary schools. Frankly, the lack of empathy conservative Christians have for everyone but themselves is stunning albeit on brand considering some of them genuinely believe Jesus Christ should only be allowed in the country with proper documentation.
Imagine thinking the God who created the entire universe with a few words gives a flip about our man-made borders.
Furthermore, President Obama deported loads of illegal immigrants and celebrities were not crying then, but I digress. Obama was doing his job; Trump is intentionally sowing fear and stirring discord among conservatives, so they remain oblivious to the fact zero of our politicians have our best interests in mind.
Proverbs (ESV) says, “There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brother.” Bizarrely, DEI, feminism, immigration, open borders, and single unmarried women with cats are not mentioned here, or anywhere else, in the Bible as things the Lord hates.
However, that’s all irrelevant. The crazy whataboutism from Tom Homan and the White House in response to Selena’s admittedly stupid video is wild, because if Homan cared about sex trafficking victims, he would be strongly advocating against the pornography industry and he would not be working for Trump. Considering he is not and Trump was buddies with Epstein, attempted to appoint pedophile trafficker Matt Gaetz into office, and has admitted to sexually assaulting women, Homan is your classical hypocrite like the majority of the Republican party. Despite all their harping about family values and morality, conservatives only care about keeping power even at the expense of their own morals (see JD Vance).
Tom Homan is a classic example of whataboutism, which is a tactic conservative Christians use all the time whenever anyone points how how not Biblical their party is. Of course, Selena Gomez can’t be against human trafficking and people unfairly profiled based on their race in the minds of simpletons like Homan.
Granted, Homan is not merely a simpleton but manipulative as he’s using something almost everyone agrees is horrific to score conservative political brownie points with a “gotcha” moment. It’s the same energy as conservatives making huge fuss whenever an illegal immigrant murders a white woman. Doesn’t matter to them that men kill women every, single day. The death of women at the hands of men only matters to conservatives when it can be utilized to justify their racism. Otherwise, per JD Vance and Harrison Butker, women have little value to them besides getting married and having children.
To be clear, I also hate liberals and they also do not care about women and children (or men). However, the American church at large agrees liberalism is not aligned with the Bible. Christians have been unwilling to acknowledge the same about conservatives merely because conservatives pretend to care about the life of the unborn, whilst doing nothing practical for them except advocating for banning abortions.
There is still zero mandatory paid maternity leave in this country, and paternity leave is a distant fantasy. Conservatives are going out of their way to undo the only decent thing any president has done about our healthcare system the past two decades, which was Obama’s Affordable Healthcare Act. Foster care systems are underfunded. Schools, which are often one of the few safe heavens for unwanted children, are being attacked and gutted financially by Republicans because the idea of all-gender bathrooms and teaching the civil rights movement, is the most heinous thing ever. That Christians can’t see conservatives are not pro-life is at this point willful ignorance bordering into outright hatred of anyone who isn’t exactly like them, which is not what Jesus is about.
Many voting for Trump aren’t affected by any of this directly so they simply don’t care. Ironically, if you read the Old Testament, people not caring about others made God extremely angry. Inequity, oppression, exploitation, and treating widows, the poor, and orphans poorly are often listed as reasons entire nations were wiped out in the Old Testament. Christians love ignoring the fact Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed because (Ezekiel 16: 4),”[b]ehold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy.“
The Bible says, “Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.” Jesus says, “…. “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother,” and “…so now I say to you. A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
God doesn’t care about borders and He certainly wouldn’t be advocating for building walls, (also, Trump is not a good person or a Christian). At some point, the American church will need to choose whether to follow Christ, or errant political ideologies. Many Christians seem to not realize you can vote for Trump whilst still holding him and the Republican party accountable when they are promoting things that are against the Bible. This is not rocket science, yet the fact many Christians who are very vocal in supporting Trump weren’t equally as vocal about calling out Elon Musk’s Nazi salute is troubling. Friends, this is not what the Jesus Christ of the Bible would be okay with.
Too many Christians have this, “Well, God uses imperfect people for His plans! Look at David!” Yeah sure, but David was still punished and held accountable for his sins. Being a Christian isn’t an automatic get out of all consequences card until we reach eternity. No political party or person is perfect, and we shouldn’t expect them. However, as Christians we should care about justice, mercy, and righteousness here on Earth and call out those we support when they are acting like the secular world. We shouldn’t shame people like Selena Gomez for having empathy, rather we should, “weep with those who weep,” as the Bible said.
Our worth is not tied to our immigration status. We shouldn’t delight at the thought of humans being sent to prison camps simply because they weren’t born in this country. Rather, we should be grateful to live in a country that’s relatively safe and sad that so many across the world are forced to flee their homes in search of a better life.
All people are made in the image of God and as Christians we should care about their well-being, because God cares about them.
