Harrison Butker, who espoused not a single Bible verse in his supposedly faith-based speech, is the star of this post.
Anyone claiming to follow Christ should look to the Bible for guidance. Pulling the faith-based card whilst not backing up what one says with Scripture renders this an opinion. Opinions are fine, but don’t try to spiritualize them. Of course, 80% of what Butker said in his speech cannot be backed by scripture, because it’s not Biblical.
Disregarding what Harrison Butker said, the fact the NFL had to clarify they don’t agree with him truly speaks to the dark, dismal, and dimwitted times we currently live in.
How is it that people require such a level of hand-holding that a single dude’s opinion sent them into a such tizzy the NFL has to say, “out of the thousands of men and women we employ, this singular, solitary one man’s opinion does not represent us.” This is like an NFL player getting caught drunk driving and the NFL being like, “we don’t support drunk driving.” Like this is a conservative man speaking to a conservative college. I really do not understand why people are regularly shocked that a conservative holds conservative views.
However, Butker’s speech is still Biblically incorrect. Conservative is not Christian, nor Biblically accurate and as Christians we need to stop supporting a movement that is nothing like Christ.
Jesus never told women their greatest calling was to have children, nor disregarded their achievements. He revealed himself to women first when He rose from the grave (Matthew 28: 1-9) allowing them to spread the news about His resurrection, which was extremely progressive for his time (not conservative).
Furthermore,“[t]he Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has made the right choice, and it will not be taken away from her,” unlike children, husbands, and jobs which can indeed be taken away from us. Jesus praised Mary for choosing the better option, which was to sit at the feet of Jesus. He didn’t shame her for not joining Martha in the kitchen.
Paul regularly credits women throughout the old testament, like Lois and Eunice (Timothy’s mother and grandmother) and he mentions women helping him in spreading the gospel as his equals. Deborah was a judge in Israel. God does not relegate women’s potential to baby making factories, so where do men like Harrison find the gall to do so?
Furthermore, telling young women to not use birth control (nothing in the Bible forbids birth control ) and have kids at the expense of their careers, while telling men to do hard things and “be masculine” rather than to be like Jesus – it’s painfully obvious conservatives do not care about families, children, Biblical values, women, or even men.
They only want to control women, because why did Butker not encourage men to be good fathers and husbands with the same fervor he railed against feminism with? Feminism arose precisely because men were exploiting and abusing women and children, rather than protecting them. To discuss feminism without addressing why it arose in the first place is exactly why feminism exists.
If folks like Harrison Butker spent half as much air encouraging men to be good fathers, husbands, providers, to lay their lives down for their wives being willing to die for them as the Bible says, as they do telling women to have kids, we’d actually see a resurgence in the family structure.
In the famous words of Kourtney Kardashian,”[p]eople are dying, [Harrison Butker].” Why are conservatives so hung up on issues the Bible doesn’t mention, whilst ignoring what the Bible actually says?
Where is the encouragement to care for the poor, to bring the lost to Christ, or to do justice? Have American conservatives truly boiled their faith down to having kids and avoiding everyone and everything that makes them uncomfortable?
The Bible says, “[h]e has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8).
“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” (James 1:27). God cares greatly about justice and equity, and crazy how there is no mention of women having kids here.
Lastly, “Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Crazy how I keep missing the Bible verses where Jesus said, “and the third greatest commandment is for women to marry and have kids, for men to be manly, and to be strongly against diversity, equity, and inclusion.”
What a powerful speech Harrison could’ve made if instead of engaging in culture wars, he’d actually encouraged these new graduates to be like Christ, to care for people as Christ did, to go out and make disciples by walking in the fruits of the spirit. To be such an example of love, peace, kindness, self-control, patience, joy, and faith to the world that we stand out. Instead, he sounds like every other conservative male with a podcast. There is nothing unlike the world about Harrison Butker, no matter how many Bible verses he posts on his Instagram.
As always, I encourage those with the misfortune of stumbling upon my blog to read their Bibles everyday. This will equip you to know when men (and women) are spewing nonsense. The proper response to nonsense is not to fall victim to outrage culture, smear campaigns, and harassment, but to spread the actual truth based upon the Bible.
Only God can tell us what to do with our lives, whether we’re men or women. The beauty of a having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is that each of us can go to God in prayer, ask for direction, and be given an answer . For some women, that means getting married and having kids. That’s a beautiful thing. Children are a gift, marriage is a blessing. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be a stay-at-home mom.
For others, that means a career in a field you love or feel called too. Many women thrive in their careers, are better mothers when they aren’t at home 24/7, and having a successful, fulfilling career where you’re awarded for your work is not less valuable than having kids, or being married. Saying otherwise is what’s truly evil here.
Children and marriage will not fulfill you. Being a single millionaire traveling the world at 40 won’t fulfill you. These things may bring you happiness in some form, but this is where folks like Butker and T.J. Moe are in error and where their true colors are revealed. They do not have the heart of Christ, they only desire to control women. Because whether you are a man or a woman, the only thing that will truly satisfy you is a relationship with Jesus Christ.
There is no superior, Godlier option here either but God’s will for your life is not for you to be unhappy, limited, or controlled by wolves in sheep’s clothing that use faith to justify limiting a woman’s potential. Jesus came to set us free with the truth. He treated women as equals not as inferiors. He didn’t chastise them for not having kids, but encouraged them to have a more intimate relationship with Him. Knowing God and bringing others to Christ is our greatest calling, whether we’re women or men, and that should be our number one focus. True satisfaction is found in Jesus Christ whether you’re single, married, a #petparent, or childless.
So, whatever you do, do it for the glory of God and according to His will.
